The Basics<\/p>\n
In any poker game, each player receives five cards and makes a hand. The best hand wins the pot. A hand can consist of any combination of the player’s own cards and those in the community.<\/p>\n
A hand is usually made up of a pair (two of the same card) and a single card, called the kicker. A hand can also contain a combination of three cards that have no common suit.<\/p>\n
In a poker game, any bet or raise is limited to the number of chips in the pot at that time. This limit is often established by the players themselves, though some games have fixed limits.<\/p>\n
The rules of a particular game may require that a player place an initial contribution, called an “ante,” to the pot before the cards are dealt. This ante can be a small amount of money or a large one.<\/p>\n
Some games require that players have to contribute to the pot before the cards are dealt, such as in a “blind” position. In these positions, the first two players in each row have a small blind and the last player in the row has a big blind.<\/p>\n
